Elizabeth Jane Mason, R.N., Ph.D.

Elizabeth Jane Mason, R.N.,Ph.D, of Greensburg, Pa. and formerly of Verona, Pa. died at home on February 24, 2010 surrounded by her family and beloved dog, Kari. She was the eldest daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. William S. Mason of Uniontown.

A graduate of Uniontown Senior High, Elizabeth went on for extended education. She graduated from the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing, The University of Pittsburgh (BS), Wayne State University (MS), and the University of Wisconsin (Madison) (PhD.)

She was an Instructor at UPMC School of Nursing, an Assistant Professor in Nursing at the University of Wisconsin (Madison), an Associate Professor in the medical-surgical graduate program at Virginia Commonwealth University (Richmond, VA), an Assistant Professor for the Undergraduate Nursing Program at The Ohio State University and an Associate Professor with Tenure at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing Masters and Doctoral Program

She was an international consultant in Standards of Practice/Quality Improvement to health care agencies and universities throughout the U.S., Great Britain and Australia.

Her book, “How to Write Meaningful Standards of Care” was printed in three editions and two languages and sold internationally. She then designed the clinical software system, EXCELCARE, used in hospitals and healthcare agencies throughout the U.S., Great Britain and Australia.

The EXCELCARE software assists clinicians to plan, document, implement and evaluate interdisciplinary therapy/care. It assists managers to identify the number and type of staff and the costs required to implement the clinicians’ planned therapy/care.)

Her writings on quality care provision were published in professional journals in the U.S., Great Britain and Germany.

Dr. Mason’s work has had tremendous impact on nursing clinical practice and thought through her thousands of students and clinicians in the facilities using the EXCELCARE software to facilitate clinical care.

She was much loved by her neighbors and was a loyal and true friend, helping others in whatever way she could.

She was dearly loved by her family and missed greatly by her sister, Catherine M. Rosensteel of Greensburg, and her two nephews, David P. Mann and his wife, Eileen, of Pittsburgh and Shawn M. Rosensteel and his wife, Elizabeth Ellen, of Pittsburgh.

Family and friends are invited to attended a graveside service on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Uniontown, Pennsylvania.

Arrangements are under the SKIRPAN FUNERAL HOME, Uniontown, PA.
