Pastor agrees to disinter son; Fayette officials will drop enforcement action
The pastor at a North Union Township church agreed Tuesday to disinter his son, and bury him in a cemetery by the end of the year. The Rev. Ewing Marietta, pastor at Liberty Baptist Church on Oliver Road, said that he was still uncertain where he would bury his son, Marcus, 18, who died in a car accident on Route 40 in July 2009.
“We’re currently trying to work through this, and it’s not going to be an easy situation for us or our congregation,” Marietta said.
Once Marcus Marietta’s body is moved, Fayette County assistant solicitor Sheryl Heid said the county would drop an enforcement action that was initiated after officials in the county’s zoning office discovered the teenager had been illegally buried at the church.
Marietta was fined just over $5,000 earlier this year. After the enforcement action was filed, he had asked the county’s zoning hearing board to approve a special exception to have a cemetery on church grounds.
The board denied the request.
Marietta’s attorney, Mark Rowan, said his client would also drop an appeal of that ruling.
Judge Nancy D. Vernon scheduled a follow-up hearing for January.
