n Last week’s death of John Caputa has left the Brownsville Area School District without an official superintendent. During Caputa’s sick leave, which was followed by an unpaid leave of absence, former assistant superintendent Dexston R. Reed performed the duties of superintendent.

In September, Mr. Reed was appointed substitute superintendent, the position he now occupies. Under state law, the school board has up to one year to select a new superintendent.

n On the high school football scene, California Area High School captured its third victory against five losses by bouncing the West Greene Pioneers, 20-0, at Booster Field.

Brian Schaum, who scored on runs of 4 and 30 yards, and Scott Santo, who went in from the 17, led Coach Mel Maruschak’s offensive squad. Jim Hillen, Don Zahand, Brendan Folmar and Schaum spearheaded the Trojans’ splendid defensive effort.

At Elizabeth, the Elizabeth-Forward Warriors shut out the Brownsville Area Falcons 20-0. It was Elizabeth’s second win against five losses, while Brownsville dropped its sixth game against only one win.

n There are plenty of options for your entertainment dollar this weekend. At the Hiller Volunteer Fire Co.’s annual dance on Saturday night, music will be provided by the Bobby Earl Orchestra at a cost of only $10 per couple. Friendship Lounge in Richeyville will feature the Invictas on Saturday night, and the slight cover charge will include breakfast.

Disco and funk are back at the Malden Inn as the Route 40 establishment presents the Madhatters in the downstairs room. If it is country music you prefer, drop by the Triple R Bar (formerly the Look-Inn) in Grindstone this Friday night, where you can catch the act of the Country Swingers.

n The Cohen Furniture Co. in Brownsville was robbed of approximately $1,000 over the weekend in what police described as a “professional” job. According to Patrolman Horace Johns, the store closed for business at 6 p.m. on Saturday, and janitor Happy Johns discovered the robbery at 7:50 a.m. Monday.

Officials revealed that the store’s large safe was opened without any signs of force.

The burglar used a small can of oil to lubricate the combination and then a piece of sand paper to smooth his fingertips.
