Geibel rallies past J-M

By Adam Brewer for The 3 min read

JEFFERSON – Geibel Catholic rallied for a 3-2 road victory in Section 5-A volleyball action against Jefferson-Morgan Tuesday night to remain undefeated. The Lady Gators (3-0) won the contest 25-22, 15-25, 23-25, 25-15 and 15-12, and snapped a two-game losing skid to the Lady Rockets.

“Last year was last year,” Lady Gators coach Rick Watkins said. “We were talking about this year and everything we have worked for will show up at the end of the season. It felt good to come in here and win. I told the girls that I have come in here with mature and talented teams and loss at this place. This is a tough atmosphere to win in. To come in here with a younger team, speaks volume to their maturity.”

It was a back-and-forth opening set with both squads having scoring sprees, but with the score tied at 22-22, the Lady Gators recorded the final three points of the set to take home the opening match-up.

“It was a confidence builder to get that first set,” Watkins said. “Also it showed us that we could win in this environment and take a game.”

The Lady Rockets rebounded in the second match and took an early 7-3 lead, which translated into a 17-10 lead that forced Watkins to call a timeout.

J-M (1-2) closed out the second set with an 8-5 run and evened up the section contest at 1-1.

In the third set, the Lady Rockets scored the first four points of the set and held an 11-6 lead later. After back-to-back aces by Annie Caccimelio, the Lady Gators ended the Lady Rockets’ run and tied things up at 20-20 late in the set. Caccimelio had 16 service points.

After trailing 21-20, J-M bounced back with a 5-2 scoring edge and was in firm control of the overall match-up at 2-1.

The Lady Gators responded in the fourth set by going up 10-2, which caused Lady Rockets coach Shanna Yourchik to call a timeout of her own.

Geibel remained on top of the action in the fourth set, and took home a dominated 25-15 win to force a deciding fifth set.

J-M trailed Geibel 9-4, and thanks to some unforced errors by the Lady Rockets, the Lady Gators were able to capitalize on the mistakes.

“We are always ready to play Geibel because we want to beat them,” Yourchik said. “It has been a competitive game for both teams throughout the years, and tonight was no different. It’s always a big rivalry. We started off strong, and then suffered a letdown. We are trying to put together a complete game and be more consistent.”

“Our girls just never quit,” Watkins said. “To show up in game four and game five was big for us. We are young and we are learning. You can’t take any sets off and every game in this section is critical.”
