MAPLETOWN – A Uniontown man who is working in the Turkeyfoot Area School District was hired Thursday as a special education teacher by the Southeastern Greene School Board. Michael Shepard was hired as the secondary (grades 7 to 12) special education teacher for the Mapletown Junior/Senior High School during a special meeting of the board called for personnel matters.

Shepard was hired at an annual salary of $39,750, but will receive an additional $1,000 for having his master’s degree. The action was taken unanimously with a 5-0 vote.

Joseph Spiker, who is the chairman of the personnel committee, made the motion to hire Shepard. Voting in favor of the motion were Spiker, board president Rick Barzanti, Gary Yoskovich, Sam Cossick and Dr. Thomas Howard. Board members Leonard Novak, Ed Kamenos, Dave Richter and Janet Pennington were absent.

Shepard’s hiring was the only action taken during the brief meeting, which began after an executive session that was held to discuss personnel issues.

The regular monthly meeting of the board will be held at 7 p.m. on Sept. 28 in the Mapletown Junior/Senior High School cafeteria.
