Faieta brothers lead B-C to big win over Maples

MAPLETOWN – There is no quarterback controversy at Beth-Center High School. However, at the Faieta dinner table there just might be.

Both Sal Faieta and Gino Faieta saw action at quarterback in a 75-6 win for the Bulldogs at Mapletown High School on Friday.

Sal Faieta, the junior starter, played for roughly one and a half quarters before giving way to his little brother Gino, a freshman backup.

“There’s no quarterback controversy here,” Beth-Center coach Ed Woods said with a laugh. “Sal is our starter, but Gino did some nice things with the second unit.”

Still, it’s fun to play the numbers game.

Gino finished with a team-high 72 yards rushing and two touchdowns, while also completing the only pass of the night. Meanwhile, Sal finished with 65 yards rushing and two touchdowns of his own but failed to complete a pass.

“They are very competitive with each other and I think that’s good for them and for us,” Woods said.

It’s a friendly competition that centers around their father, Scott Faieta, who just happens to be the defensive coordinator for the Bulldogs (3-0).

“I’m sure he will let me know that he had more yards and completed a pass tonight,” Sal said of his brother. “He played well.”

Gino was quick to give credit to his older brother.

“He’s always helping me improve,” Gino said. “He was telling me what to expect from the defense before I went in the game.”

Of course, none of Gino’s accomplishments could have happened if it wasn’t for Sal and the first string unit.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 29-0 lead after the first quarter as Sal scored on runs of 16 and 2 yards while Jake Sofran added a 1-yard run and Deshan Brown scored from 3 yards out. The Bulldogs also added a safety.

By the time Gino and the BCHS second unit got in the game, the Bulldogs were firmly in control, 36-0.

“When we broke down film I just couldn’t find any weaknesses,” Mapletown veteran coach George Messich said. “I’ve been doing this 31 years, and I think Eddie has done a fantastic job getting them ready for this season. I really think (Beth Center) has a chance to do something special this year and I would love to see a team from our conference make a playoff run.”

The Maples (0-3) did get one quick glimpse of their possible future when freshman back Colby Kincell broke loose for a 74-yard touchdown run. Kincell led all rushers with 88 yards on 17 carries.

“We knew these first three games were going to be very tough,” Messich said. “I’m not saying we are going to win the rest of our games, but I do think we will be more competitive against these next teams.”

Beth Center finished with 359 yards total offense. Sofran finished the night with two touchdown runs and 55 yards on five carries. The Bulldogs played most of the game without the services of running back Jeff Tarley.

He was injured on the second kickoff of the night and did not return after suffering a lower leg injury. Woods said he hoped Tarley would be available for the Bulldogs next game when they host Carmichaels. Tarley had scored four touchdowns in each of the Bulldogs first two games.

The Maples return to action on Friday when they travel to West Greene. Last year, the Maples beat West Greene to give Messich his 100th career victory.
