School officials move to thwart abuse of students

SOUDERTON, Pa. (AP) – Officials at a suburban Philadelphia high school say they took action to thwart an online bid to mark a “National Kick a Freshman Day” at the school on Friday. The Reporter of Lansdale says at least one Souderton Area High School student was disciplined over the matter.

Principal Sam Varino said in a statement Friday afternoon that officials identified “a case of cyberbullying using Facebook … related to National Kick a Freshman Day.?” He says staff members “handled the case with those involved.”

Superintendent Frederick Johnson said “any kind of bullying or hazing” will not be tolerated.

The paper quoted parents as saying more than 100 students had signed up at a Facebook group noting the day, and they were disciplined by removal from various after-school activities. District officials said they could not confirm those details on Friday.
