William J. Sherman
William J. Sherman, 64, of Connellsville, passed away Sunday, September 19, 2010, in Latrobe Hospital. He was born October 12, 1945, in Connellsville, a son of the late John and June Frederick Sherman.
Bill was a member of Christian Missionary Alliance Church. He made his career with the Army, served during the Vietnam War and retired after 24 years of duty. Bill was awarded the following decorations in the military: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Unit Citation, Army Service Ribbon, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal (7th Award), Expert M-16 Rifle, Meritorious Service Medal and Army Achievement Medal. He also provided security services for various local agencies throughout the area. In his spare time, Bill enjoyed golfing and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Debra Ostrich Sherman; twin children, Jeremy and Katie Sherman, at home; a son, William J. Sherman, of Texas; a daughter, Tammy Sherman, of Texas; and two brothers, Donald Sherman and wife, Dolores, and John Sherman, all of Connellsville.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, and two sisters, Evelyn Fuller and Linda Sherman, who died in infancy.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the VITO C. MARTUCCI FUNERAL HOME, 123 S. First St., West Side Connellsville, and until 11 a.m. Friday, the hour of service, with Pastor James Turnbull officiating.
Interment will be private.
Vietnam Vets Inc. of Fayette County will conduct a ritual at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
Military Services will be conducted by members of Viet Nam Vets Inc. of Fayette County and AMVETS Post 103 of Hopwood on Friday at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home.
