Guiser, Henckel move up H-S Touchdown Club standings
Frazier’s Joshua Guiser moved into second place and Geibel Catholic’s Christian Henckel’s four touchdowns moved him into fourth place in the Herald-Standard Touchdown Club rankings through three weeks of the high school football season. Guiser scored a pair of touchdowns in the Commodores’ 25-0 win over Jefferson-Morgan last week to give him 36 points on six touchdowns for the season. Guiser is two touchdowns behind Beth-Center’s Jeff Tarley, who leads with 48 points on eight touchdowns.
Tarley suffered a knee injury in the Bulldogs’ 75-6 win over Mapletown and didn’t even get a carry, let alone score a touchdown.
Zach Mundell of Carmichaels held onto third place with 34 points on five touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions. He didn’t score in the Mikes’ tough 10-7 loss to Monessen.
Henckel, meanwhile, piled up four TDs as the Gators steamrolled West Greene, 39-14, last Saturday. He has five touchdowns and 30 points on the season.
California’s Dakota Conway, Beth-Center’s Sal Faieta and Uniontown’s Fred Johnson are next in line with four touchdowns and 24 points each. Conway scored once last week, while Faieta and Johnson found the end zone twice each to establish themselves in the top 10.
Rounding out the top 10 are Beth-Center’s Kyle Colborn, who has one touchdown and 17 extra point kicks for 23 points, and Laurel Highlands’ Matt Shull and Beth-Center’s Jake Sofran are tied for ninth with three touchdowns and 18 points each. Shull scored once and Sofran twice last week.
The Herald-Standard Touchdown Club honors the top scorers among area high school football players. At season’s end, the top scorer will receive a trophy and his name will be engraved onto the Touchdown Club’s traveling plaque, which will be displayed at his high school for a year.
