Smithfield officials concerned about road

SMITHFIELD – Smithfield Borough Council on Tuesday discussed efforts to contact the state Department of Transportation (PennDOT) about the poor condition of Water Street, a state road. Borough secretary Jamie Hoone said that she had contacted PennDOT about the road crumbling near a storm-water drain, but has yet to receive a call back.

Council also discussed other issues where the berm of Water Street is crumbling.

Hoone said she would contact PennDOT again to express the borough’s concerns.

In other matters, council agreed to buy a digital camera for borough police Officer John Lingo III. The borough set a $100 limit for the camera and accessories.

In other business, council voted to donate $250 to the Smithfield Lions Club to help fund the purchase of treats for children who participate in the borough’s trick-or-treat activities.

Trick-or-treating will be held Oct. 30. The time for the Halloween march and treat distribution will be decided at the October meeting.

In other matters, council:

n Announced the reading circle will meet at the Smithfield Public Library at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

n Announced recycling will be held on Monday.

n Announced the next council meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 19.
