Four golfers break 40 in Frazier’s 198-221 victory
The Commodores had the round of the season with four golfers breaking 40 Thursday, leading Frazier to a 198-221 Division II, Section 2 victory over visiting Charleroi at Linden Hall Golf Course. Frazier’s Tyler Rock had an eagle on his way to the medalist round of 2-over 37. Eddie Miller broke 40 for the first time this season, joining Robert Gondura and D.J. Hudik at 39. Zach Smalich and Andrea Lash both finished with 44, with one of those rounds completing the scoring.
Brandon Korek was the low man for the Cougars (1-8) with a 40.
Frazier (5-2, 8-3) remains in the playoff hunt with key matches at Bentworth on Monday and Greensburg C.C. on Tuesday.
Belle Vernon 192, Laurel Highlands 203 – The Leopards remained in the Division I, Section 2 playoff hunt while the Mustangs clinched a playoff berth with Uniontown’s loss to Mount Pleasant.
Belle Vernon improves to 8-2 in the section. Laurel Highlands is 9-1 in the section and 10-1 overall, and finishes the season next week with matches against Albert Gallatin (Wednesday) and Uniontown (Thursday).
The Leopards’ Bo Lustig was medalist with a 2-under 34 on his home course at Willowbrook Golf Course. Brad Antal shot a 38, and Sean Molchan finished with a 39. Brett Bishop’s 40 and Kirby Manown’s 41 closed the scoring. Tim Moore’s 46 wasn’t used.
Alex Ashton and Jeremy Guzy both shot 38 for the Mustangs. Derek Plaski finished with a 40, and Richard David finished with a 42. John Gabriel’s 45 rounded out the scoring. Ben Cole’s 46 was thrown out.
“We didn’t lose, they beat us,” said Laurel Highlands coach Mike Smith. “That’s a good score for us (at Willowbrook). The kids played well.”
Mount Pleasant 201, Uniontown 205 – Zac Heide carded a 37 to lead Mount Pleasant to a Division I, Section 2 win at Norvelt Golf Course.
Mark Polcha and Andy Yoder each shot 39, while Ryan Bull rounded a 42 for the Vikings (7-4, 6-4). Cameron Swink added a 44.
Josh Nelson and Luke Wallace led the Red Raiders (9-3, 6-3), shooting 38 each. Mason Fordyce carded a 40 and Ben Sampson shot a 41. Zack Nelson finished with a 44.
Mount Pleasant faces Ringgold Monday.
Connellsville 205, Albert Gallatin 211 – Johnny Leonard shot a 2-over 34 to lead the Falcons to a Division I, Section 2 victory over the visiting Colonials at Pleasant Valley Country Club.
Eric Harrer was a shot off Leonard’s finish, and Shawn Bennett shot a 40. Tyler McFadden and Ryan Burkholder both shot 46. Mike Aumer’s 47 was thrown out.
Pat McDonough was the low man for the Colonials (0-9, 2-9) with a 39. Brandon Sutton, Ben Rozzi and Brandon Kenney all shot 41. Charlie Depp’s 49 closed the scoring. Garrin Guesman’s 52 wasn’t used.
Connellsville improves to 2-8 in the section and 3-8 overall.
Beth-Center 214, Carmichaels 231; Beth-Center 230, Washington 310 – The Bulldogs moved two wins closer to securing a Division II, Section 8 playoff berth by sweeping a triangular at Carmichaels Golf Club.
Beth-Center improves to 7-3 in the section and 9-4 overall, and finishes the regular season with Brownsville Monday and Waynesburg Central Tuesday. Carmichaels defeated the Prexies for a split, and is now 5-3 in the section and 5-6 overall.
Beth-Center’s Austin Smith was the medalist in both matches, finishing with a 2-over 39. Tyler Sabatula played in both matches with a 44, as did Matt Sabatini with a 46.
Taylor Dingle finished with a 43, and Lucas Diethorn and Alex Antonio both shot 44 in the Carmichaels match. A.J. Tworzydlo’s 50 and Brock Hartley’s 51 were used in the Washington match.
California 227, Jefferson-Morgan 237 – California remained in the playoff race by defeating the Rockets at Greene County Country Club.
Nick Roberts led the Trojans (6-5, 5-4) with a 42 as Alex Roach shot a 43. Eric Rucci carded a 44 as Sam Luketich added a 46. Derek Stein shot a 52.
Alex Rush led the Rockets (5-7, 4-5) with a 41 and Zach Berkstresser carded a 42. Cameron Roberts shot a 45 and Brandon Faieta shot a 52. Jacob Guthrie carded a 57.
California hosts Carmichaels at Cedarbrook Monday for the first of three remaining section matches.
Girls tennis
Southmoreland 4, California 1 – Miranda Hall won first singles for the Lady Trojans, but the visiting Lady Scots won the rest of the matches for a Section 1-AA road victory.
Hall defeated Southmoreland’s Chelsea Pence, 6-0, 6-1. The Lady Scots’ Chelsie Leonard lost only one game in sweeping No. 2 singles from Courtney Koschalk, as did teammate Elizabeth Fontanazza in her win at No. 3 singles against Taylor Tiano.
Southmoreland’s Corina Horak and Kristy Figg lost the first set at No. 1 double, but rallied for a three-set win over Crystal Rook and Courtney Pro. Ashley Belzer and Clarissa Horak completed the victory by winning their No. 2 doubles match, 6-3, 6-0, over Annie Zheng and Kimberly Sears.
Girls volleyball
California 3, Mapletown 0 – The Lady Trojans swept past Mapletown for a Section 5-A victory by the scores of 25-16, 25-3, and 25-17.
Hannah Russell had six kills and eight aces for California and Dani Zajicek finished with nine assists. Kelsey Tyler was strong at the net with three blocks. California improves to 2-3 in the section and 2-4 overall.
Carmichaels 3, West Greene 2 – The Lady Mikes won the odd matches, including a 15-8 victory in the final set for a Section 5-A victory. Carmichaels won the first and third sets (25-19, 25-7), while the Lady Pioneers won the second set, 28-26, and fourth set, 25-23.
Sarah Hathaway led the way for Carmichaels (2-3, 3-4) with 19 service points and 15 assists. Jessica Hair had 27 service points. Marissa Krall and Cameron Grimes both finished with six kills.
Macy McMillen had seven kills and six blocks for West Greene (1-4), while Joy Engle-Young finished with seven blocks. Courtney Eddy had a good defensive effort with eight digs, and Cathy Mason finished with eight assists.
Upper St. Clair 3, Albert Gallatin 0 – The visiting Lady Panthers won their Section 2-AAA match in a sweep, defeating Albert Gallatin, 25-13, 25-9, and 25-8.
Albert Gallatin slips to 0-5 in the section and 2-5 overall.
Men’s golf
Penn State-Mont Alto 303, Penn State Fayette 334, Penn State-New Kensington 359, Penn State Shenango 375, Penn State-Greater Allegheny 381 – The Roaring Lions finished second in the PSUAC event hosted by Penn State-Greater Allegheny at Butler’s Golf Course.
Zack Rockwell led the Roaring Lions with a 2-over 74. Mike Peton and Zach Wolfe both shot 86, and Cody Ward finished with an 88.
Mont Alto’s Scott Levy was medalist with a 1-under 71.
Women’s volleyball
Point Park 3, Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus 2 – The Roaring Lions rallied back from a 2-0 deficit, but the visitors won the final set, 15-13, for the non-conference road victory.
The Lady Pioneers won the first two sets, 25-7, 25-23, but Penn State Fayette came back with the next two wins, 25-19, 25-20.
The Roaring Lions’ Marney Hillen had a strong performance with 12 kills and 15 digs, as did Leah Ambrosini with 15 kills and 11 assists. Alex Rossi finished with 15 digs and four service aces. Katie Sleasman controlled the offense with 34 assists.
Penn State Fayette (5-5, 4-1) is back in action Saturday with a PSUAC match at Penn State-New Kensington.
Waynesburg 3, Mt. Aloysius 0 – The Yellow Jackets cruised past the visiting Mounties for a non-conference home victory. Waynesburg won by the scores, 25-23, 25-29, 25-19.
Jordan Barton had a team-high 10 kills. Natalie Ranallo finished with 19 assists. Katelyn Blaich had nine digs.
The Yellow Jackets (5-7) are on the road Saturday with a conference triangular with Chatham at Westminster.
