Pet obesity event set for October

By Herald Standard Staff 2 min read

A Fun Walk to raise awareness about pet obesity will be held Sunday, Oct. 24, in the parking lot of Laurel Mall in Dunbar Township. Participants will gather near the old Ames department entrance. The walk will start at 9 a.m.

The walk, organized by veterinarian Dr. Curtis Geary, is geared toward raising awareness about pet obesity and providing the steps to help all pets and their owners live healthier and longer lives.

The walk includes entry fees of $10 for those who pre-register and $15 on the day of the walk. Proceeds will benefit Caring for Critters and the St. Francis Paws Society, which help pets in need. T-shirts are given with registration, but they are not guaranteed for those not pre-registered. A “doggie bag” will be given with goodies and information and tips on how to prevent obesity in pets.

Each participant will receive a tag and then will walk around a designated area. A stamp will be given for each lap they complete in one hour. At the end of the walk, each participant will be given tickets to be used for prizes in a Chinese auction. Prizes will include certificates from area restaurants, floral shops, and one from Nemacolin Woodlands Resort & Spa in Farmington.

Dogs will be welcome to walk with their owners. All dogs must be on a short leash and kept under control at all times. Clean up bags will be provided, and all dog owners must clean up after their pets.

Entry forms can be picked up at the Geary Veterinary Services clinic in Lemont Furnace or can be downloaded @www.gearyvet.vetsuite.com. Go to “clinic info” and then “clinic forms.” Scroll down to “Fun Walk” and hit “download form.” For more information, call Rose at 724-437-4191.
