Local roundup: Laurel Highlands clinches share of Section 2 golf title
Laurel Highlands won at least a share of the Division I, Section 2 title with a 207-228 victory over Albert Gallatin Wednesday at Duck Hollow Golf Course. Alex Ashton and Derek Plaski were co-medalists with 40s for the Mustangs who can win the section outright if they defeat Uniontown today at Duck Hollow.
“We obviously want to win it all, but Uniontown is going to be tough to beat,” said Mustangs’ coach Mike Smith. “Whenever Uniontown or Laurel Highlands play each other, you never know what can happen, so we’ll have to play our best. One thing for sure is that Uniontown won’t lay down; they’ll give us all they got.”
John Gabriel and Jeremy Guzy finished with 43s for the Mustangs while Nick Ezzi carded with a 44.
Pat McDonough shot a 41 for the Colonials, while teammates Charlie Depp and Brandon Kenney shot 44 and 45, respectively.
Ben Rozzi and Brandon Sutton shot 49s for the Colonials.
Belle Vernon 200, Uniontown 216 – The Leopards secured a playoff berth with medalist Mike Manown’s even-par finish at Willowbrook Golf Course.
The Leopards also benefited from Bo Lustig’s 37 and Tim Moore’s 39.
Brent Bishop finished with a 43 for the Leopards, while Sean Molchan shot a 45.
Ben Sampson finished with a 42 for the Red Raiders while Luke Wallace and Zack and Ben Sampson carded 45s.
Mason Fordyce medaled for the Red Raiders with a 49.
Ringgold 200, Connellsville 223 – The Ringgold Rams had three players shoot in the 30s, including medalist Connor Kane who shot three-over 37.
The Rams’ Cody Scruggs and Jared Hancock shot 38 and 39, respectively.
John Leonard shot a two-over-36 for the Falcons, while Eric Harrer finished with a 39.
Justin Teets and Shawn Bennett finished with 49s, while Mike Aumer carded with 50.
Frazier 202, Jeannette 225 – Frazier medalist Tyler Rock tied the school record with a one-under-par 33.
Robert Gondura shot a five-over 39 for the Commodores, while D. J. Hudik finished with a 40, Eddie Miller had a 44 and Andrea Lash a 45.
Matt DePonte finished with a four-over 38 for the Jayhawks.
The Commodores came up short on Tuesday against Greensburg Central Catholic, 218-214, as Tyler Rock shot a four-over 41.
Girls tennis
Brownsville 4, Southmoreland 1 – The Falcons took an early 2-0 lead with Sarah Shashura and Angie Pelehac winning first and second singles respectively.
Shashura dispatched the Scotties’ Chelsea Pence, 6-0, 6-0, while Pelehac defeated Chelsie Leonard, 6-0, 6-0.
The Scotties’ Elizabeth Fontanazza defeated Kayla Bayne 6-3, 6-1 in third singles.
Brownsville’s Megan Yocabet and Valarie Columbia defeated Corrina Horak and Kirsty Figg in first doubles, 6-1, 6-1.
Payton Ferguson and Ashtyn Guty sealed the deal for the Falcons with a 6-1, 6-1 second doubles win over Clarrisa Horak and Ashley Belzer.
Greensburg Salem 5, California 0 – The Lady Golden Lions swept the Lady Trojans as Kathleen Orr, Virginia Elinsky and Cindy Baur won singles matches.
Orr defeated Miranda Hall in three sets: 0-6, 6-4 and 6-1, while Elinsky defeated Courtney Koschalk 6-2, 6-2.
Baur secured the game with a 6-0, 6-1 win in third singles over Taylor Tiano.
Golden Lions’ Leigh Hastings and Alexis Ferrari defeated Courtney Pro & Crystal Rook 6-2, 6-4 in first doubles, while teammates Kelly Pang and Sam Patrick defeated Kimberly Sears & Annie Zheng 6-0, 6-0 in second doubles.
Girls soccer
Hempfield 2, Connellsville 0 – Darian Shasko and Abby Neish scored in the first and second half, respectively, for the Lady Black Knights.
Ashlyn Fratto made 20 saves for the Lady Falcons.
Women’s volleyball
Penn State Fayette 3, Penn State Greater Allegheny 0 – The Roaring Lions swept the Lions behind Leah Ambrosini and Alex Rossi’s who had four kills each, while Katie Sleasman led Fayette with seven assists.
Waynesburg 3, La Roche 0 – The Yellow Jackets swept the Redhawks, 25-12, 25-7 and 25-20.
