?JEFFERSON — Jefferson-Morgan School Board voted Monday to approve a cyberschool program that would allow cyberstudents to complete a Jefferson-Morgan curriculum and earn a diploma from the district.

Last month, Don Martin, a representative from the Cyber Solutions Initiative, presented the board with the cyberschool option that will allow cyberschool students to receive an online education that would parallel the district’s regular in-class curriculum.

The plan will cost the district $20,000 for a three-year commitment. The company will provide students with the learning software, hardware and curriculum, but the district has the option to create its own curriculum. The cost to the district for each full-time cyberstudent would be $2,300 annually or $250 per online course.

In other business, the district approved a request by PGS Onshore Inc. with an area office located near Eighty Four to conduct a geophysical survey on the district’s property. The board agreed to allow the survey but only if the company shares the results with the district.

Geological surveys predict oil and natural gas underground.

Superintendent Donna Furnier said the district owns its mineral rights.

In other matters, Furnier said Greene County school district superintendents met with state Rep. Bill DeWeese, D-Waynesburg, who listened to school budget concerns regarding the governor’s proposed budget cuts. Furnier added that the superintendents will be meeting with DeWeese again May 6.

Furnier also said she will be meeting with a representative from Hayes Design Group Architects of Bridgeville on Friday to discuss the latest feasibility study report.

Hayes Design Group was the firm retained to conduct the cost-sharing study between Jefferson-Morgan, Carmichaels Area and Southeastern Greene school districts.

The group will meet with superintendents and business managers from the districts May 2, and the committee, including school board representatives, will meet May 23.

In two personnel matters, the board voted 5 to 4 to grant David While a sabbatical leave for health restoration, beginning May 13 and agreed to post an opening for an elementary school learning support teacher with a special education certification.

The board also agreed to seek bids to replace the middle-senior high school entrance doors.
