A South Union Township man underwent surgery to repair his fractured jaw at a hospital in Pittsburgh this afternoon after he was allegedly beaten by an inmate while jailed at the Fayette County Prison Wednesday.

Fayette County District Attorney Jack R. Heneks Jr. confirmed that the assault occurred Wednesday afternoon in one of the cell blocks when an unidentified inmate attacked Robert A. Karwatske II.

Karwatske, who was picked up Tuesday on a bench warrant for failing to appear for trial in an alleged attack on another man with a knife outside a Uniontown bar last year, was taken to Uniontown Hospital for treatment and later moved to UPMC-Mercy Hospital where he remained today.
