The Melody of the Heart

3 min read

As I read Psalm 4 and consider imitating David?s approach to ?be angry and do not sin? I wonder if I?ll ever leave my bed again. Be angry, and do not sin.

Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still.~Psalm 4:4

Many days peace eludes me. I leave my bed without dealing with my heart and I fail to return to it when the seeds of strife and discord are sown all around me. Though instruments are nice for meditation on the psalms, true peace can only resonate when the melody is made in the heart. Though the times be unquiet, I must learn to keep my own spirit calm and quiet constantly. A few thoughts I?ll share on Psalm 4: Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness!

You have relieved me in my distress;

Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer.~Psalm 4:1

God hears me because of His mercy and righteousness, not my merit or effort.

How long, O you sons of men,

Will you turn my glory to shame?

How long will you love worthlessness

And seek falsehood?~Psalm 4:2

Many men of noble birth miss God and his blessing of peace by mistaking the false joy of worldly increase for the true joy of knowing Him.

But know that the LORD has set apart for Himself him who is godly;

The LORD will hear when I call to Him.

4 Be angry, and do not sin.

Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still.

5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness,

And put your trust in the LORD.

6 There are many who say,

?Who will show us any good??

LORD, lift up the light of Your countenance upon us.

7 You have put gladness in my heart,

More than in the season that their grain and wine increased.~Psalm 4:3-7

Having full trust in a God that always hears, let not the anger of injustice and unrighteousness done to me neither turn me away from Him nor forsake his peace and joy. For this is what foolish men do. Even when their lives are prosperous, they lack true peace and joy because of their lack of faith.

I will both lie down in peace, and sleep;

For You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.~Psalm 4:8

The Lord will deal with those who harm his own while they patiently and peacefully trust in him.

As we must be taught to worship an unseen God, so we must seek an unseen good. ~ Matthew Henry
