Portable computer catches fire at Uniontown Hospital

No patients were affected but two employees suffered smoke inhalation after a portable computer used to monitor vitals and other information caught fire Tuesday afternoon in Uniontown Hospital.
Uniontown Fire Department was activated for a report of heavy smoke in the third floor of the hospital.
The computer, attached to a wheeled stand, was sitting in a third floor hallway when it caught fire.
The fire department said the fire was extinguished by hospital personnel before crews arrived on scene.
Firefighters vented the third floor to clear heavy smoke from the area. Patients were not evacuated.
Karen DeiCas, director of development and community relations for Uniontown Hospital, confirmed that two employees were treated for smoke inhalation.
“A small electrical fire occurred in a computer on wheels on the 3 West Nursing Unit. No patients were affected,” DeiCas said.
“Subsequently, the area was ventilated and operations and patient care returned to normal. An internal evaluation is being conducted for safety precautions.”
