Connellsville high school will be ready for Aug. 29 opening

CONNELLSVILLE — The Connellsville Area School Board took measures Wednesday to hire various staff members in preparation of the Aug. 29 first day of classes for the 2011-12 school year.

Directors were additionally assured that although renovations and new construction work will be ongoing at the senior high school, students, staff and visitors will be safe during the project.

John Pappas, Eckles Construction Services vice-president and construction project manager, said that the approximately $40 million upgrade of the high school was “on schedule” and rumors to the contrary were unfounded.

“School will start on time,” he said. “The interior spaces are ready for the students to come.”

Pappas indicated the school driveways will be able to accommodate buses and vehicles later in the month. In the interim, he added, work will continue to install various underground utility lines.

The board was advised that various contractors have submitted payment requests totaling nearly $1 million.

“Foundations and masonry walls will be the main focus during the month of August,” said Pappas, noting that structural steel is being fabricated for the new science and administration wings.

In personnel matters, the directors hired Brittany Molitor and Kaylan Trimboli as long-term elementary substitute teachers and Gina Rulli as a long-term secondary business substitute teacher.

Also hired was Kaitlyn Cline as a long-term social studies/English substitute teacher and Lisa Show as a long-term school nurse.

Directors additionally approved the full-time status for Harold Kooser, Michael Lattanzo, Jay Hillen, Richard Blackstone and Jesse Snyder. All had previously been part-time district security officers.

In related action, the board also agreed to hire Glenda Jordan and Lois Fiano as Dunbar Township Elementary School personal student aides and Robin Miller as a personal student aide at Junior High East. Directors set the hourly wage for the position at $11.25.

In other matters, the board also conducted the following business:

n Hired Lou Keyser as the senior high school football defensive coordinator at a salary of $5,924; Robert Malia as senior high football equipment manager at a salary of $2,769 and Marie Nedley as senior high school head swimming coach at a salary of $4,829.

n Admitted Kelsey Little and Jacquelyne Pritts as non-traditional students in the Connellsville Area Career and Technology Center cosmetology program.

n Added Laureen Barnes, Sonia Bentley, Marsha Kulka, Michelle Shipley-Herbert and Kirsten Small to the substitute cafeteria list.

– Approved Schneider’s and United Dairy to supply certain district schools for the upcoming school year.

– Added Crystal Shultz, Victoria West, Christine Addis, Deborah Kineer, Linda Colbert, Samantha McQuade, Joyce Lininger and Allison Povlik to the support professional substitute list.
