GERMAN TWP. — German Township supervisors amended the township’s sewerage ordinance this week to require a shorter distance for tap-ins.

The new rule would require system tap-ins to take place at 150 feet instead of 400 feet, which was what the previous ordinance required.

Supervisor Daniel Shimshock said the change was made to be more in line with the standard amount of footage required by the United States Department of Agriculture Rural Utility Services.

In other sewerage related matters, the supervisors said the township has obtained the majority of rights of way for the sewerage project that will affect Ronco, Edenborn, Leckrone, Puritan, McClellandtown and part of Route 21. Preparations for the upcoing project are on schedule, according to the supervisors, and the bidding process will begin within the next few months.

All three supervisors said they will attend a conference for landfill inspectors in Harrisburg Sept. 7 and 8. Supervisors Robert Croushore and Shimshock are current landfill inspectors. Supervisor Floyd “Buster” Gladman will sign up for classes to become an inspector at the conference.

Gladman will also be attending a dirt and gravel program at the Republic VFD social hall Aug. 16 and 17 representing the township.

The program organized by the Fayette County Conservation District will discuss environmentally sensitive maintenance practices concerning dirt and gravel roads.

Those townships that send a representative will be eligible for future grants concerning dirt and gravel roadways.

Supervisors reminded residents that all 2011 property and per capita taxes have been mailed. It is the responsibility of any resident who did not receive these tax notices to contact the tax office at 724-892-2017. The office will not be open Aug. 29.

A concerned resident from Edenborn contacted the supervisors about starting a neighborhood crime watch. The supervisors told the resident they will assist her on where to go to start the crime watch group.

In other matters, supervisors:

n Thanked everyone who attended a Heart Walk held at Browns Run Trail last month. Shimshock said approximately 160 people attended the event, which included several booths set up along the trail.

n Reminded residents to continue to cut their grass. Those residents who do not comply will be fined.

n Announced the next meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sept. 13.
