Man headed for court in alleged theft of hospital donations

A Uniontown man accused of stealing a donation can to benefit Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh last week will have his day in court.

Uniontown police Officer Travis Shandor said Robert Fleming Huey, 28, of 20 Pershing Court, Uniontown, was charged by Magisterial District Judge Michael M. Metros with theft and receiving stolen property following the incident on Aug. 10.

Huey waived both charges against him to Fayette County Court during a preliminary hearing Tuesday afternoon before Metros.

According to Shandor, police were summoned to the Fayette County Courthouse for a reported theft of a donation can from the sheriff’s department shortly after 9 a.m.

Shandor said the sheriff’s department was able to provide officers with a surveillance photograph of the suspect who was later identified as Huey.

Shandor said later that morning officers received a call from Fayette County Juvenile Probation reporting a man matching Huey’s description at a business on West Main Street. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Huey in possession of several items he had just stolen from the store, Shandor said. He was taken into custody without incident.

Shandor said that Huey admitted to stealing the can and using the $25 inside to pay his phone bill and for bus fare.

Shandor said the can was placed in the courthouse a few weeks ago to raise money for Children’s Hospital.

He also noted that Huey was found in possession of a small container of urine that he intended to sell to another person who needed to pass a drug test.
