No one injured after mentally challenged woman takes joyride
Uniontown police said no one was injured after a mentally challenged Dunbar woman took her sister’s vehicle for a joyride early Monday.
Police Officer Jeremy Schult said officers were summoned to Byers Market on Connellsville Street for a report of a vehicle that nearly crashed into the building.
Schult said when officers arrived, they found a Chevrolet Cobalt that appeared to have driven over the curb and come close to crashing into the store.
Schult said as officers began to assess the situation, they observed significant front end damage to the car as well as damage to the passenger side of the vehicle.
The officer noted that the damage appeared to be from separate accidents.
Schult said that investigating officers then spoke to the driver who gave police two false identities before eventually telling them she wasn’t sure who she is.
Schult said officers were eventually able to identify the woman as a 20-year-old mentally challenged woman from Dunbar who had taken her sister’s car without her knowledge.
The woman’s sister and mother responded to the police station following the incident and explained that the woman lives with her mother and that she took the car from her sister’s home next door after her sister left the keys in the vehicle.
The woman’s sister told police that when she took the car early Monday she traveled through her yard and also struck a tree.
Schult said police advised the family to make sure and remove keys from parked vehicles to avoid such incidents in the future.
