Joseph Charles Yourchik

Retired school teacher Joseph Charles Yourchik, age 82, of Uniontown PA passed away peacefully Monday morning August 15, 2011.

He was born June 2, 1929 in Rices Landing, PA, the son of the late Joseph and Helen Matovick Yourchik.

He was a graduate of Jefferson Morgan High School and Waynesburg University, where he was an athlete on the football and wrestling teams. After college he served as a military police officer in the United States army during the Korean War while stationed in Germany. At the end of his military service he returned to school and earned a Masters Degree in Education before beginning his teaching career in Zanesville, Ohio. He taught there for several years before returning to Fayette County, where he taught social studies and drivers’ Education at Uniontown area senior high school for 32 years. While at Uniontown he coached wrestling and football and was a member of the coaching staff in 1962, when Uniontown’s football team captured the WPIAL championship. He retired in 1991 after 40 years of teaching. He was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1275 in Uniontown, the AMVETS Post 103 in Hopwood, the American Legion Post 51 in Uniontown, the Pennsylvania State Education Association and St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church of Uniontown.

Although his passion was his family, ‘coach’ enjoyed watching football, following the Pittsburgh Pirates and working outdoors. He spent many hours maintaining the rosary shrine and grotto and taking care of plants and flowers at the Knights of Columbus in Uniontown.

Joseph is predeceased by his parents Joseph and Helen Yourchik and two brothers: Steve and John Yourchik.

On August 6, 1955 he married Mary Margaret Flautt. Together they celebrated 56 years of marriage and raised four children: Mark Yourchik and wife Sherry, Kathleen Yourchik, Julie Grubb and husband Jonathan Fellion and Michael Yourchik and wife Karin all of Uniontown; three grandchildren: Joseph, Katie, and Bryan; five step-grandchildren: Christine, Kerry, Aaron, April and Tiffany; brother, Jim Yourchik and wife Liane of Vancouver, BC; a sister-in-law, Joanne Callahan of Dayton, Ohio; several step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received in the KEZMARSKY FUNERAL HOME, 71 Pennsylvania Avenue Uniontown today from 1 to 3 and 6 to 9 p.m. and Friday morning until 9:30 a.m., when prayers of transfer will be said followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial in St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Father Michael J. Crookston as celebrant.

Interment follows in the Mt. Macrina cemetery.

Full Military honors will be accorded at graveside by the AMVETS Post 103 Hopwood.
