CONNELLSVILLE — The Connellsville Veterans Commission will conduct a tribute to the victims of 9/11 during a 10 a.m. ceremony on Sept. 10.

City Council authorized the annual Patriot’s Day service to be held during its Wednesday meeting in addition to several other activities that will be held over the coming months.

The commission will conduct the ceremony at Veterans Plaza adjacent to City Hall on Arch Street. The public is invited to take part in the service.

Council also approved the closure of a portion of West Crawford Avenue, from Arch Street to Pittsburgh Street for the Oct. 1 Autumn Mum Festival being sponsored by Downtown Connellsville, the city’s “Main Street” revitalization program.

In conjunction with the festival, Ethan Keedy, Fayette County Cultural Trust board member, said that a “trek our town” walkathon will be held to raise funds for the planned Festival Plaza, adjacent to ArtWorks Connellsville on West Crawford Avenue.

The three-mile route will follow the heritage sign trail, said Keedy.

“We’ll stop at each of the landmarks and explain the importance of the site to our city,” he said.

Applications are available at the Connellsville Redevelopment Authority office and ArtWorks Connellsville. Cost is $20 for adults and $10 for students. The fee includes a T-shirt.

Council also learned that the Student Conservation Association, Trail Town Outreach Corps (SCA, TTOC) will host an Oct. 16 homemade brew competition at the Elks Lodge No. 503, located on East Crawford Avenue from 4 to 7 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the most popular brews, said Emma Strong, TTOC representative.

Proceeds from the event will benefit local trail organizations, including the Yough River Trail Council, Westmoreland Yough Trail Chapter and the Somerset County Rails-to-Trails Association.

The Falcon Fitness 5K Race committee was also given approval to conduct its Nov. 5 event through city streets.

Council also conducted the following business:
