Deputy prison warden faces charges following crash
The deputy warden of the Fayette County Prison is facing multiple charges after he crashed into a car in Uniontown, forced it from the road and then fled the scene.
Uniontown police Officer John Kauer said Barry A. Croftcheck, 40, of 496 Braddock Ave., Uniontown, was charged Thursday by Magisterial District Judge Michael M. Metros with a felony count of accidents involving damage to an attended vehicle and summary counts of failure to render aid and following too closely.
Kauer said the charges were filed after Kroftcheck crashed into a car driven by Timothy Durst on West Main Street at 9:24 a.m. Aug. 14.
According to Kauer, Durst was traveling west on West Main Street when he began to turn his Ford Tempo onto a side street and was rammed from behind by Kroftcheck’s Jeep Cherokee. Kauer said that Kroftcheck’s vehicle forced him over the curb, through a stop sign and onto a hillside.
Durst said when he got out of his car to talk to Kroftcheck, he fled the scene in his Jeep, Kauer said.
Kauer said police were able to determine the make and model of the vehicle and later determined that Kroftcheck was the driver.
Kauer noted that Kroftcheck called police a few hours after the crash occurred and admitted to being involved in the accident and also provided police with access to his vehicle and gave a written account of the crash to officers.
Kroftcheck will face a preliminary hearing at a later date before Metros.
