Brownsville school board hires assistant principal
BROWNSVILLE — After a lengthy executive session, Brownsville Area School Board voted to hire Justin Dellarose as assistant high school, middle school and elementary school principal for the 2011-12 school year.
In a 5-2-1 vote, directors John Harvey, Rocky Brashear, Nena Kaminsky, Sandra Chan and Francine Pavone approved the motion Thursday . Ron Dellarose, who is the brother of the hired, abstained from the vote. Apposing were directors Stella Broadwater and Andy Dorsey.
“I cannot vote yes to this,” Dorsey said. “We spent about an hour in an ugly executive session talking about the hiring of friends and relatives.”
Before the vote to hire Dellarose, the board passed a motion to amend the current Act 93 Plan by providing that the position receive a salary of $46,476 with benefits, which is the same salary Dellarose received in 2010-11 as dean of discipline in the district.
In other personnel moves, the board voted to reinstate Sabrina Bachorski and Bethany Hughes, returning the two teachers to their music positions. The board also added Sean Carnathan, Stephanie Gresh, Bethany Jurczak and Taylor Williams to the professional substitute list and hired Rose Lynn as a long-term substitute school nurse. Directors also hired David Furlong as a volunteer assistant trainer for the 2011 football season.
At the meeting, the board voted to implement a federally mandated 5-cent increase to satisfy the new cafeteria meal price regulations and an additional 10-cent increase to balance the cafeteria budget bringing a total increase of 15 cents per lunch. Directors Dorsey, Broadwater and Kaminsky opposed the increase. New lunch prices for the 2011-12 school year will be $1.90 for secondary lunches, $1.75 for elementary prices and $3 for adult lunches.
Last month, the board voted to close the former Hiller Elementary School currently being used for the administration offices. At last week’s meeting, Dorsey asked officials for an update on the move and Dr. Phil Savini, district superintendent, said that due to a problem with Verizon being unable to move the phone lines, the relocation was in a holding pattern. Savini said he also needed more time to find places for supplies and equipment currently being housed in the Hiller building.
The board also:
n Accepted the resignation of Marissa Chambers as special education teacher.
n Acknowledged professional employees Brittany Nuzzo, Kellie Sampson, Megan Lent and Joni Rankin for completing three years of teaching and obtaining tenure rights.
n Reappointed Dr. Rohland Patt for school dental services at the rate of $2 per student examination and Dr. David Montagna as the school physician at the rate of $3.50 per student examination.
n Accepted the resignation of Kaminsky as board secretary and the position was filled by Harvey effective through June 30, 2015. Dorsey resigned Thursday as the treasurer and head of the finance committee.
