Charles D. Spangenberg

Charles D. Spangenberg, 88 died on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 in his home after suffering from Alzheimer’s for many years.

He was born August 14, 1923 in Mapletown, Pa., a son of the late Walter Jiles and Leola (Herrington) Spangenberg.

He attended Mapletown High School and lived in Mapletown all of his life.

Mr. Spangenberg was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served during World War II in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

He was a 60 year member of the Operating Engineers Local 66 and worked in road construction operating heavy equipment until 1972. Afterward, he worked as a guard at the Duquesne Light Warwick Mine until his retirement in the late 1980’s.

Mr. Spangenberg was known for his helpfulness to his family and neighbors and especially cherished his grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and gardening.

On August 11, 1962 he married Rose M. Lewis, who survives.

Also surviving are a son Charles W. Spangenberg of Mapletown; a daughter, Julie R. Gjormand and her husband, Robert, of Herndon, Va.; two grandchildren, Erik Gjormand and Leah Gjormand and two sisters, Ruth E. Spangenberg of Carmichaels, Pa. and Lynette Haney of State College, Pa., and a sister-in-law Lois Spangenberg of Mapletown. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews including Harold Haney and his wife, Alane, of State College and Kimberly Michniak and her husband, David, of Bobtown, Pa.

Deceased in addition to his parents is a brother Walter ‘Dub’ Spangenberg.

Family and friends are welcomed from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday in the YOSKOVICH FUNERAL HOME (724-966-5500), Martin J. Yoskovich, Funeral Director, 300 South Vine Street (Route 88), Carmichaels, Pa. where funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 2, 2011 with the Rev. John W. Hodge officiating. Interment will follow in Monongahela Hill Cemetery, Mapletown. Military graveside rites will be accorded by Cumberland American Legion Post 400 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491.
