Produce to People distribution set for Thursday

3 min read

Produce to People food distribution, sponsored by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and organized by the Rev. Adam Lawson and the congregation of Fresh Fire Church in Uniontown, will be held on Thursday at the Fayette County Fairgrounds along Route 119 in Dunbar Township.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and distribution is set for 10 a.m. Registration involves some brief demographical questions about the recipient’s household but, no proof of income or address is necessary to receive the food.

The program has been growing steadily each month. Last month, there was an extremely large response of those in need in the area, with more than 725 families and more than 1,855 people receiving food. Last month’s food distribution was unique compared to previous months.

Only produce items were given last month, which included items such as fresh pineapple, potatoes, sweet potatoes, red peppers, onions and collard greens. This month, the organization is preparing to give more diversity in the items distributed. Each month, the food given is different but includes items such as canned vegetables, chicken broth, 10-pound bag of potatoes, onions, chicken nuggets, 10-pound bags of chicken and much more.

Those receiving the food are encouraged to arrive at the fairgrounds early. Food is given out on a first-come, first-served basis. With the great need and overwhelming response last month, preparations have been made to serve even more families this month. However, recipients are encouraged to arrive early to ensure they receive food. Those coming to receive food do need to bring a box, container or laundry basket to place the food in. Boxes are not always available at the distribution.

It takes a large amount of volunteers to serve the community through the distribution. As the program continues to grow, the program needs more volunteers.

Churches and other organizations are encouraged to be a part of volunteering. Individuals are also welcome to volunteer.

It takes at least 75 volunteers to run the event each month and, thanks to volunteers from places such as Pennsylvania Institute of Health and Technology, Fresh Fire Church, Faith Assembly of God, Target, Uniontown Food Bank and many other organizations, the program remains possible and successful in the community. The Produce to People program will continue through 2012 on the second Thursday of each month.
