Police arrest suspect in rape of Cal U student
A Maryland man who is a student at Indiana University of Pennsylvania is behind bars after police allege he raped an 18-year-old California University of Pennsylvania student at a location in Coal Center on Sunday.
Southwest Regional police Chief John D. Hartman said Harold Stanbeck, 26, of 7702 Beechnut Road, Capital Heights, was charged in district court in Washington County with rape, sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault and disorderly conduct.
Hartman said the incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. at a party at a residence in Coal Center.
Hartman said that after the rape, the alleged victim left the party and went to her dormitory on the Cal U campus and contacted university police, who then contacted Southwest Regional police.
Hartman said the woman was then taken to Monongahela Valley Hospital in Carroll Township.
According to Hartman, police used video surveillance taken on campus to identify the suspect.
Stanbeck was later discovered at a friend’s home in Coal Center, where he was taken into custody without incident, Hartman said.
During questioning following his arrest, Stanbeck admitted to having a sexual encounter with the woman.
HeraldStandard.com does not identify the victims of alleged sexual assault.
Stanbeck was placed in Washington County Prison on $50,000 straight cash bond following his arraignment.
A preliminary hearing has been tentatively set for 9:30 a.m. Dec. 14 at Central Court in Washington.
