Washington County elections finalized
The ballot count is now official in Washington County, with no changes in the winners for the countywide offices despite some close races.
With all of the absentee, provisional and write-in votes counted, the three winners for county commissioner are Democratic incumbent Larry Maggi, with 23,760 votes; Republican incumbent Diana Irey Vaughan, with 21,066 votes; and Democratic challenger Harlan Shober, with 17,267 votes. Republican challenger Bill Northrop received 16,836 votes, placing him in the fourth spot and without a seat on the board of commissioners.
There were only 112 votes between the candidates for district attorney. Incumbent Steve Toprani did not run again. Republican Eugene Vittone, who has been an assistant district attorney, captured the most votes, with 21,211, for the win. Democratic challenger Dave DeCarlo placed second, with 21,099 votes.
In local races involving write-in candidates, Tom Russell was unopposed in a write-in campaign for California Area School Board in Region 2, which includes the Coal Center area.
Russell is an incumbent, but had not filed for re-election in the spring primary race. He received 60 votes.
In the race for a two-year seat on West Brownsville Borough Council, Ada Brosky won the seat on a write-in campaign, with 23 votes.
Brosky had also launched a campaign for a four-year seat, receiving 75 votes, to place fourth in the five-person race for three seats. Winning the three seats on council were Ron White Jr., with 137 votes; Dana DeAngelo, with 132 votes; and John T. Petro, with 99 votes. Richard Black placed fifth, with 64 votes.
There were three four-year seats and a two-year seat open on Elco Borough Council, with all of the seats determined by write-in votes.
The two-year seat was won by Bea Imbrogno, while the four-year seats were won by Nunzio SantoColumbo, James Cullen and Lee Vercoe.
There were no other candidates.
According to officials at the county election bureau, all write-in candidates will be contacted to see if they want to accept the positions.
