Uniontown police said a Smithfield woman could be facing multiple drug charges after officers found suspected illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia inside her purse while at the Fayette County booking center.

Officer Jeremy Schult said the incident occurred around 9 p.m. Monday when state police brought the woman, who is in her 40s, into the booking center to be processed on charges of simple assault and harassment.

After she was arraigned and released on $5,000 unsecured bond on those charges, Schult said the woman asked him to retrieve her cellphone from her purse so she could call someone to get a ride home.

“While looking through (her) purse for her cellphone, I discovered a plastic straw with unknown white powder residue in it,” Schult said.

He said he also found a silver metal container with some other pills and prescription medication that was in a bottle with the label removed.

Schult said charges are pending against the woman for drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The woman’s name is being withheld pending the formalization of charges.
