Give-A-Christmas fund rises to $14,660

By Frances Borsodi Zajac heraldstandard.Com 3 min read

The Give-A-Christmas fund rose to $14,660 after HeraldStandard.com readers sent contributions that amounted to $610.

“This is wonderful,” said Sparkle, the Christmas star, who is campaign mascot. “I see individuals and groups of people working together to make this campaign a success. It’s so important now that there’s only 10 days left in the campaign. Remember that we want to raise $40,000 to help the Salvation Army. All of the money stays in the HeraldStandard.com readership area. When you give a donation, it goes to your local branch of the Salvation Army and helps your neighbors.”

Sparkle received some nice notes.

“Please find enclosed our check for our donation to Sparkle. This was some of our proceeds from the annual senior/junior powder puff game. Merry Christmas to all,” wrote the Laurel Highlands cheerleaders and football players and Laurel Highlands senior and junior girls powder puff teams.

“God bless our service people around the world,” wrote the employees and owners of Clar-Mac Furniture and Appliance Sales in Point Marion, including David M. Callahan, Zoann S. Callahan, Larry D. Grubb, Donna Conard, Mike Hart, Bob Friend and Mark Pekar.

Other groups participating included Triangle Class of Great Bethel Baptist Church in Uniontown and Grove Class of McClellandtown Presbyterian Church.

Many people made thoughtful gifts on behalf of others, such as Betty Gorman of Adah, who wrote, “Dear Sparkle, Please accept this donation in honor of the Monday Night Bowling League at Fairbank Bowling Center, especially my team members Diane, Mary and Louise, and my good friend Donna. I know that you will put it to good use. Keep up the good work.”

Other donors included anonymous, Uniontown; Vicki and Wendell Reese, Uniontown; Ken and Dorothy Marcinko, in honor of their grandchildren Justin and Nicole Glosner, Holly, Isaac and Sophia Marcinko; Robert Sonoga of Mission Viejo, Calif., in memory of brothers Richard S. Sonoga and Thomas R. Sonoga, Uniontown; Martha and Richard Marva, in memory of parents George and Mary Wonkovich and Steve and Mary Marva, Smithfield; Beth Beck, in memory of brother Douglas Allen Smith; Masontown; anonymous, in memory of Joe Batis Jr., Barb Batis and Geano Galie, Uniontown; Joseph and Marlene Rura, Uniontown; Larry and Janet Shinsky, Uniontown.

Donations to the campaign will continue to be received until noon Friday, Dec. 23.

The final amount raised will be reported in the Christmas Day edition of HeraldStandard.com. Donations for the campaign can be mailed to Give-A-Christmas, P.O. Box 1147, Uniontown, Pa. 15401, or brought to the HeraldStandard.com office in Uniontown during business hours. Sparkle cans also have been placed in numerous store locations in the HeraldStandard.com distribution area. Readers also may upload or view Sparkle photos for Give-A-Christmas fundraisers at PubHub at www.heraldstandard.com.
