‘Polar bears’ ready for New Year’s Day event
CONNELLSVILLE — The Connellsville Polar Bear Club is expecting a large turnout for its annual plunge into the Youghiogheny River on Sunday.
“This event has grown from 40 brave souls our first year to nearly 350 people last year,” said Nancy Jacobyansky, club co-founder.
Since 2003, club members have extended an invitation to those willing to join them in the frigid river and to those less hearty to offer support from the shoreline at Yough River Park.
The plunge will take place at 11 a.m. However, a photograph of the “Polar Bears” will be taken at 10:45 a.m.
Fayette EMS, along with New Haven Hose Volunteer Fire Co., will be at the park should assistance be needed by participants.
Jacobyansky recommended that those planning to take part in the plunge wear an old pair of shoes and bring a dry pair to wear home. Towels, dry clothes and blankets also should be brought.
“We’re only in the water for a short period of time, but the chill can last all day long if you don’t put dry clothes on right away,” she said.
Additionally, those attending are asked to bring a nonperishable food item that will be donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society food bank.
Afterwards, a bonfire will take place and hot chocolate will be served.
The public is encouraged to join in the New Year’s Day event, either as a participant or spectator.
“It’s a lot of fun,” said Jacobyansky.
