A Brownsville man was arrested on multiple charges arising out of allegedly robbing a state liquor store in Uniontown and fighting with the store’s manager Thursday evening.

Uniontown police said Stephen Andrew Lach, 41, is charged with robbery, retail theft, simple assault, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief.

According to the criminal complaint, Lach tried to steal a $9.99 bottle of whiskey from the Wine and Spirits store on West Fayette Avenue. The store’s manager, Michael Matzus, saw the bottle in Lach’s coat pocket as he was leaving the store and yelled at Lach to stop but had to chase him to a business next door.

As the two men fought over the bottle, they fell through Value Tobacco’s front window. Despite lacerations to Matzus’s right side, he was able to hold Lach against a wall until police arrived, the complaint stated.

Lach was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Michael Metros of Uniontown and set his bond at $50,000. Lach is being held in Fayette County Prison.
