John W. Shirley, III 39, of Connellsville, Pa., died Sunday February 6, 2011 at his residence. He was born October 10, 1971 in Uniontown a son of Bill, Jr. and Janet (Zavislan) Shirley of Connellsville.

John was a graduate of Connellsville High School, Class of 1990, where he was a member of the state championship baseball team. He attended Bethany College where he played baseball. For the past 14 years, he was employed as an operating engineer for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and prior to that he worked in construction. John was a member of the South Connellsville Rod and Gun Club, B.P.O. Elks No. 503, Slovak Club, Sons of Italy, Polish Club and the Moose Lodge. He was also an avid golfer and he played in various area golf leagues and he was a former football coach at Geibel High School.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one son, Jake Shirley of Scottdale; one daughter, Doran Shirley of Donegal; one sister, Jennifer Deichert and her husband, Andy and their children, Marisa and William of Uniontown; one brother, Jeff Shirley and his wife, Mandy and their son, Rubin of South Charleston, W.Va. and several aunts and uncles and many cousins.

Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the BROOKS FUNERAL HOME, INC., 111 E. Green Street, Connellsville, where Prayers of Transition will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Rita’s Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Bonafed as celebrant.

Interment will be private.
