Utility upgrades local equipment

Pennsylvania American Water announced today the start of construction to replace approximately 1.7 miles of aging water main in southwestern Pennsylvania to improve service reliability and increase water flow for firefighting. The cost of the system improvements is approximately $1.4 million.

“We are replacing small-diameter mains with larger ones to improve reliability, water pressure and fire protection for our customers,” said Dave Gumbert, Pennsylvania American Water manager of field operations for southwest districts. “This investment will replace mains that, in some cases, were installed almost 100 years ago.”

These latest improvements follow the company’s investment of nearly $9.9 million in 2010 to install more than 18 miles of water main in southwestern Pennsylvania.

In addition, Pennsylvania American Water continues to work on the approximately $101 million upgrade of its water treatment facilities serving Washington County and the Mon Valley. The plant upgrades started last June.

Over the next several weeks, the company will replace aging water main on North Cottage Avenue, Uniontown.

Pennsylvania American Water expects to complete installation of the new ductile iron pipe, service connection tie-ins and final paving restoration by the end of March, weather permitting.

Crews are scheduled to work weekdays between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Traffic disruptions are possible during construction, and motorists are asked to avoid the construction zone.

During the projects, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower than normal water pressure. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the length of these temporary inconveniences.
