Brownsville girls win 62-59 thriller over Albert Gallatin

Angie Pelehac drained two free throws with two seconds remaining in the game to give Brownsville a 62-59 non-section victory over Albert Gallatin Tuesday night. The Colonials (0-9) had rallied from a 20-17 deficit to take a 33-31 lead at the half.

The Lady Falcons (5-3) outscored the Colonials in the third quarter (14-6) to take a 45-39 lead, heading into the final quarter.

Pelehac finished her night with 12 points, while Chelsea Ulery had a game-high 24 for the Lady Falcons.

Ashton Guty added 14 points to the Lady Falcons’ cause.

The Lady Colonials finished with three players in double figures, led by Courtney Haines (15), while Ally Rudolph and Taylor Spence each scored 13 points.

Beth-Center 42, California 40 – Anna Shashura scored 14 points for the Lady Bulldogs, but it was her play in the final seconds of the game that gave her team the win.

With seven seconds remaining Shashura made a basket to give the Lady Bulldogs (5-3) a 42-40 lead, and stole ball before the Lady Trojans (5-5) could attempt a game-tying shot.

Haley Huhn led the Lady Bulldogs in points (15), while Rachel Sabatini chipped in with 10 points.

Courtney McMasters led the Lady Trojans with 14 points.

West Greene 42, Mapletown 39 – Megan Reeves scored 10 points for the Lady Pioneers who won their first Section 3-A game of the year.

Wendy Dickerson scored 10 points for the Lady Maples (0-9, 0-3), while Kristi Guritza added 10.

Boys basketball

Hundred, (W. Va.) 58, Jefferson-Morgan 29 – Hundred jumped out to a 15-point lead in the first quarter with a 20-5 run.

Dalton Kuhn led the Hornets (6-1, 2-1) with 18 points and Nick Phillips added 13, holding Jefferson-Morgan in single digits in every quarter.

Bradon Faieta paced the Rockets (1-8, 0-0) with 10 points.

The Rockets return to action Friday at Carmichaels.

Norwin 90, Laurel Highlands 82 – The Knights rallied from a 52-47 deficit to take a 64-63 lead with 2:17 left in the third quarter.

The Mustangs (3-4, 2-1) retook the lead briefly at 66-64, but the Knights (5-2, 2-1) regained the lead at 68-66 and never looked back.

A trio of players accounted for 80 of the Knights’ points. Ben Baird and Andy Carter each scored 30 points, while Matt Palo added 20.

Zach Partyka was the Mustangs’ top scorer with 22 points, including six treys, while teammates Mason Zeigler (18), DiVonte Walton (14), Joe Yuhas (13) and Matt Shull (12) rounded out the double-digit scoring.

Latrobe 64, Albert Gallatin 44 – The Wildcats outscored the Colonials 28-11 in the second half to win their first section game of the year.

Doug Johnson led a trio of double-figure scorers for the Wildcats (4-4, 1-2) with 17 points, while Chris Budzenski had 13 and Josh Shoemaker 11.

Deon McKoy recorded 17 points for the Colonials who host undefeated section opponent Connellsville on Friday

Charleroi 58, Brownsville 49 – The Cougars used a 14-8 scoring advantage to ice the Falcons in the fourth quarter of this Section 4-AA match.

The Cougars built a 27-22 lead at halftime, and led 44-41 after three quarters.

Kyle Shannon had 13 points for the Cougars (4-5, 2-1)

Derek Jones scored a game-high 13 points for the Falcons (5-5, 1-1), while teammates Christian Floyd and Zack Landman added 12 and 10 points respectively.

California 81, Mapletown 39 – The Trojans enjoyed a 25-10 scoring advantage in first quarter and never looked back as they improved to 8-3.

Brian Fisher had a game-high 26 points for the Trojans, while Tanner Huffman (16) and John Tyler (11) also contributed to the Trojans’ effort.

Marcus Cumpston and William Cox each scored 14 points for the Maples (0-9).

Girls swimming

Brentwood 92, Belle Vernon 55 – Mary Wardle won the 100 freestyle for the Lady Leopards, while Natalie Martin won the 500 freestyle.

Boys swimming

Brentwood 80, Belle Vernon 77 – The Leopards came up just short while taking eight events.

Tom Crawford won the 200 and 100 freestyle, while Scott Verner took the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Alex Yawny and Dave Merz won the 200 IM and 500 freestyle respectively for the Leopards.

The Leopards also captured two relays as a team of Verner, Yawny, Matt Bronakowski and Crawford won the 200 Medley with a WPIAL qualifying time.

A team of Merz, Yawny, Verner and Crawford also won the 200 freestyle.

Women’s basketball

California University of Pa. 77, Bloomsburg 72 – The Trojans made seven free throws to take the victory.

Megan Kermond gave the Vulcans (7-3) their final lead of the game (57-56) with a three-pointer with 9:20 left in the game.

Waynesburg University 78, Westminster 75 – The Yellow Jackets enjoyed a 43-29 lead at halftime shooting 54 percent (19 of 35).

Men’s basketball

Waynesburg University 75, Westminster 69 – Behind 50-49 with 12:56 left in the game, the Yellow Jackets used a 13-0 to pick up the win.
