Teen convicted for setting man on fire

By The 1 min read

A teenager was convicted as an adult in Fayette County Court on Friday of attempted homicide and related charges for beating a West Virginia man, tying him up and setting him on fire.

Donald Lee Evans, 17, of 311 E. Church Ave., Masontown, and a 14-year-old boy who was adjudicated as a juvenile assaulted David Lee Overfield, 47, of Morgantown on Mack Farm Road in Nicholson Township between 1 and 4 a.m. Aug. 22, 2009.

Police said that Overfield was trying to buy crack cocaine when the teens attacked him. The three were in Overfield’s vehicle when police said Evans and the other teen hit him and beat him with blunt objects.

Then, police said, the two pulled Overfield from his vehicle, tied him up with rope, set him on fire and left him to die.

They stole his vehicle to get away, police said.

Overfield suffered burns to his chest, stomach, back, arm and hand and was treated at a Morgantown hospital.

Assistant District Attorney Douglas S. Sepic prosecuted the case.

Judge John F. Wagner Jr. will sentence Evans at a later date.
