2010 fatal crashes decline as police step up enforcement

A sharp decline in fatal traffic accidents coincided with a spike in drunken driving arrests and traffic citations in 2010, according to state police in Uniontown. State police Lt. David J. Heckman, commander of the Uniontown state police station, said his patrol unit began the year with a goal to crack down on drunken driving, seatbelt usage and traffic enforcement in general.

Heckman said that as a result of the crackdown by police, drunken driving arrests jumped by 63 percent over 2009 totals with troopers charging 743 motorists for driving while intoxicated.
