Supervisors OK agreement with new animal shelter FARMINGTON – The Wharton Township supervisors on Monday approved a service agreement with a new animal shelter due to the recent closing of the Steve Courson Humane Society.
Supervisors unanimously approved ratifying the signing of a service agreement with Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) on Rankin Airshaft Road in North Union Township.
The agreement, which calls for the township to pay the SPCA $143.59 a month for responding to animal complaints, replaces the township’s agreement with the Humane Society
Last week, the state Department of Agriculture closed the Humane Society, which also is in North Union Township, because the shelter failed inspections in November and December.
Jim Means, chairman of the board of supervisors, said the township paid the Humane Society approximately the same amount as it agreed to pay the SPCA.
Five dogs were abandoned on McClelland Lane the day the Humane Society closed, Means said.
In unrelated business, the supervisors agreed to buy new bulletproof vests for Constable Charles Lambie and deputy constable Philip Varndell.
The township traditionally buys vests for its constables and their current vests are worn out, Means said. He said the constables will submit bills for the vests after they obtain them.
Also, the supervisors agreed to send secretary Carrie Morrison to payroll law training for $199 and municipal finance management training for $125.
