Strong 2nd quarter paces Carmichaels
CARMICHAELS – Carmichaels boys basketball team scored 33 points in the second quarter en route to a 73-53 home victory against Mapletown Monday night. The Mikes (6-8, 3-1) defeated their close rival for the second time this year, after knocking off the Maples (1-14, 1-4) at the King Coal Tournament on Dec. 28.
The 73 points was a season-high for Carmichaels, as it was paced by a good inside-outside game for the duration of the contest. Jonathan Krall tallied 31 points, and was a force from the outside and in the transition game.
Seth Krall chipped in with 13 points, while Colton Yoders provided the Mikes with an inside presence, as he collected 17 points and eight rebounds.
“Colton is getting more aggressive on the inside for us,” Carmichaels coach Don Williams said. “He helps out on both ends of the floor and we just need him to be consistent. He did hit some shots tonight and we just take what the other team’s defense gives us.”
The Mikes held a 12-9 lead at the end of one, and were up by a slim 14-11 margin in the early stages of the second quarter. Carmichaels’ pressure defense and its ability to convert the fast-break bucket broke the game open as the Mikes went on a 22-3 spree.
“We wanted to put pressure on them and get them moving faster than what they wanted to,” Williams said. “We turned it into some lay-ups and added to our lead in that second quarter. We caught them standing around a bit, and it turned in our favor.”
Jonathan Krall had 17 points in the lopsided quarter, as Carmichaels held a 45-20 halftime lead.
The Maples rallied a bit in the second half, as they scored the first nine points in the third quarter and held a 14-11 scoring edge in the frame.
“The second quarter was the difference,” Mapletown coach Bo Garnek said. “After halftime, we pressed a little more and got back in a better zone on defense. We didn’t quit in that second half and we continued to play in that second half.”
Marcus Cumpston led the Maples with 22 points and connected on four treys. William Cox added 15 points, while Michael Rumble scored nine.
Both teams will take a break from section play today, as Carmichaels travels to Brownsville and Mapletown hosts Geibel Catholic.
