CALIFORNIA – Pittsburgh football fans may bleed black and gold, but California University hopes to add a little red to the mix. To celebrate the Pittsburgh Steelers’ participation in the Super Bowl, student government and the University’s Cal U for Life program have organized a “Red Zone” blood drive in competition with Bay Port High School in Green Bay, Wis.

Students, faculty, staff and alumni at Cal U can score “pints” for their team by taking part in an American Red Cross blood drive from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Feb. 4 – the last day of classes before Super Bowl Sunday.

The blood drive will be held in the Performance Center, inside the Natali Student Center on the Cal U campus.

Each blood donor will have a chance to win a football autographed by Steelers tight end Heath Miller.

Cal U’s goal is to beat the total number of units collected in the Green Bay Blood Drive on Feb. 2. Students at Bay Port hope to collect 50 units.

“Of course, everyone here has Super Bowl fever,” said Ryan Jerico, coordinator of student and young alumni programs at Cal U.

“We’re hoping to bring a little extra attention to the blood drive by competing with a school in the Green Bay Packers’ hometown. “It’s fun and it’s for a good cause.”

Individuals who are at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.

Prospective donors should bring photo ID.
