Prescription discount cards available to Greene residents
WAYNESBURG — Free prescription discount cards are available for Greene County residents who are uninsured or underinsured, because of Greene County’s participation in the National Association of Counties’ Prescription Discount Card Program.
The program makes discount cards available to participating counties and their residents, allowing them to save an average of 24 percent on prescriptions. The program is free and open to anyone for use whenever a prescription is not covered by insurance. One card can cover an entire family, including pets, with no restrictions or limits on how many times a card can be used.
?”The NACo prescription discount card program is an invaluable resource to be able to provide to our residents,” said Commissioner Pam Snyder, chairwoman of the board of commissioners. “Even residents who do have insurance are finding that many of their prescriptions are not covered, and the discount card helps alleviate some of the financial burden associated with paying out-of-pocket for necessary medications.”
During the month of June, 27 prescriptions were filled in Greene County with the use of the discount cards, saving an average of 38.29 percent per prescription, according to NACo.
After the discount, the average prescription price was $52.08 versus the average retail price of $84.39, a savings of $32.31 per prescription and $872.35 total, county officials said.
The discount card program is administered by CVS Caremark, a pharmacy benefit management company and the largest pharmacy health care provider in the country. CVS Caremark negotiates with pharmacies to offer discounts on retail prices. The cardholder then pays the negotiated discount price or the pharmacy’s retail price, whichever is lower. More than 1,400 county governments participate in the program, saving residents nearly $400 million, according to NACo. The program has been offered in Greene County since May 2008.
Locally, participating pharmacies accepting the discount card are Gabler’s Drug in Carmichaels, Giant Eagle Pharmacy in Rices Landing and Waynesburg, and CVS Pharmacy, McCracken Pharmacy, Rite Aid Pharmacy, Walgreens and Wal-Mart Pharmacy in Waynesburg.
Prescription discount cards are available in the Greene County commissioners’ office at 93 E. High St. in Waynesburg, or can be downloaded by visiting www.caremark.com/naco.
