Hopwood Villagers look to plan events
?There’s a new group in town.
Calling themselves the Hopwood Villagers, the recently formed volunteer group was created to organize events and other activities in Hopwood.
The group replaces the former Hopwood Village Project organization responsible for the $1.2 million streetscape project that was completed in North Union and South Union townships in 2008.
Rick Rohm, chairman of the Hopwood Villagers, said members of the Hopwood Village Project did a lot to beautify the village and that it’s now up to the new group to plan events that will attract people to the historic, mountainside village.
“They did their job to make Hopwood beautiful. We’re going to do our job now keeping it beautiful and preserving its heritage, while encouraging people to visit. I think people like to come to Hopwood. We have a nice community,” Rohm said.
The Hopwood Villagers meet at 6:30?p.m. the third Thursday of every month at Rick’s 50’s Cafe, located at 1190 E. National Pike in Hopwood.
J.R. Golden, vice chairman of the Hopwood Villagers, said anyone interested in joining the group is invited to attend the meetings.
“We’d like to see people come to the meetings and get more involved,” Golden said.
Golden, who also is a firefighter with Hopwood Volunteer Fire Department, said the group will work closely with the fire department and any other organization or business that would like to take an active role.
Hopwood Villager secretary/treasurer Mary Lynn Longley said the group provides residents, businesses and organizations a chance to work together to promote Hopwood.
The group has received support from both North Union and South Union township supervisors, who officially recognized its creation.
Rohm said the group is looking into what would need to be done to become an official nonprofit organization. All events sponsored by the Hopwood Villagers are done entirely on donations, which are always accepted.
Donations can be made by sending a check made payable to the “Hopwood Villagers” to 1190 E. National Pike, Hopwood, PA, 15445.
