?SMITHFIELD — Smithfield Borough Council agreed Tuesday to release two construction companies from their $12,500 road bonds.

Council required Carload Express of Pittsburgh and BNSF Logistics, a national company with an office in Red Lion, to become bonded while using Railroad Street as an access route while transporting construction equipment, including a crane, to the Fayette County Business Park.

Borough engineer John Over of K2 Engineering Inc. of Uniontown assessed the road and determined no damage was caused by either company.

Because the project is now complete, council will return to BNSF Logistic $12,200 of the bond money, but retain the $300 non-refundable deposit. Carload Express has requested the borough keep its bond of $12,500 as a donation to the community.

In other matters, the summer reading program at Smithfield Public Library is under way and has been well received by participants of all ages, borough officials said.

Preschool children and those through age 12 will explore books that share the common theme of “one world, many stories.” Teens ages 13 to 19 will discover themselves through the theme of “you are here” and adults ages 20 and older will discover “novel destinations,” officials said.

It is the goal of the program to motivate children to read, develop positive attitudes about reading, help youth and teens strengthen their reading skills over summer vacation and to encourage people to visit the l.

Incentives and prizes will be given to participants.
