Perry Township – Bridge may soon be torn down

PERRY TWP. – Township supervisors said they are hoping to see a problem bridge torn down within the next few months.

At Tuesday’s meeting, supervisors A.J. Boni, Janet Galla and Clarence Johnson unanimously voted to authorize Widmer Engineering of Connellsville to advertise for bridge demolition bids once the engineering firm has completed putting together the project specifications.

The township plans to demolish Happy Valley Bridge, which has been closed for three years. The bridge will then be replaced.

Boni said Widmer Engineering is close to completing the project specifications and that the sooner the project is put out for bid the better.

In February, supervisors voted to enter into a $6,750 contract with Widmer Engineering for bid specifications to demolish the bridge.

Boni said supervisors are hopeful the project can be advertised and bids accepted by the township’s next meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. April 5, so that a contract can be awarded.

Supervisors previously voted to begin investigating funding options to replace the bridge.

Boni estimated the cost to replace the bridge between $350,000 and $400,000.

Cost of demolition is estimated around $10,000, Boni said.

In other business, supervisors announced a spring clean-up day will be held April 5 in conjunction with normal garbage collection for residents.

Supervisors also announced that street sweeping should occur sometime in early April.
