Education cuts tops in nation

1 min read

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – Gov. Tom Corbett’s proposal to slash funding for 18 state-supported Pennsylvania colleges and universities by more than 50 percent is considered the largest such proposed cut in higher education in the country this year.

In his budget address Tuesday, Corbett announced the cuts at the 14 state-owned schools in the State System of Higher Education, and the “state-related” schools of Penn State, Pittsburgh, Lincoln and Temple.

School leaders say that, while they expected cuts, they did not expect such steep ones as were proposed by the governor.

Penn State president Graham Spanier said at a news conference Wednesday that students should expect higher-than-expected tuition hikes if the proposal is approved by lawmakers.

The Washington-based American Association of State Colleges and Universities says Corbett’s proposal appears to be the biggest such cut in the country this year.
