The timing of the traffic signals at all the intersections on Fayette Street and the intersection of Main Street and Grant Street in Uniontown would be coordinated to improve traffic flow as part of a state project to upgrade the seven intersections.

Survey crews and engineers have been studying the intersections since last week to prepare specifications for the work so state Department of Transportation (PennDOT) can seek bids for the project some time next year, PennDOT spokeswoman Valerie Petersen said.

The intersections involved begin at Five Corners, where Fayette Street, Main Street and Mount Vernon Avenue meet. The other intersections are at Morgantown Street, South Beeson Avenue, South Gallatin Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue, Grant Street and at Main Street and Grant Street.

Improvements would vary among the intersections. They would include installing energy- efficient, light-emitting diode (LED) lights, signal heads, new controller cabinets, signage, pavement markings and push button signal changers for pedestrians, Petersen said.

The upgrades would be similar to the intersection improvements done on Main Street and Morgantown Street several years ago.
