Workshop offered

Community Connections: Fayette County Public Schools Helping Students Succeed, will hold a workshop for parents, students and community members 6-7:30?p.m. March 29 in the conference room at Fayette County Behavioral Health, 215 Jacob Murphy Lane.

The workshop series are a cooperative initiative between Albert Gallatin Area, Brownsville Area, Connellsville Area, Frazier, Laurel Highlands and Uniontown Area school districts.

?This month’s speaker is Donna Cartia of the Private Industry Council addressing attendees on career awareness and post high school options. Cartia will have tips for seniors including resources for post-secondary options and will speak to students are the local labor market and how it relates to the global economy.

A questions and answer period will follow the presentation and light refreshments will be served.

Registration set

The Albert Gallatin Area School District will hold kindergarten registration for the 2011-12 school year from 9?a.m. to 2:30?p.m. April 11 at George J. Plava Elementary, April 12 at A.L. Wilson Elementary, April 13 at Masontown Elementary and Friendship Hill Elementary, April 14 at D. Ferd Swaney Elementary and April 15 at Smithfield Elementary.

To be eligible for kindergarten, a child must be 5 years of age on or before Aug. 31, 2011. To be eligible for first grade, a child must be 6 years on or before Aug. 31, 2011. Children who are currently enrolled in the district’s kindergarten program need not register for first grade.

Parents must present their child’s official birth certificate from the state in which the child was born, residency verification and the immunization record at registration. Call the elementary school for a listing of required immunizations.

A vision, speech and kindergarten screening test will be held during registration. New students must also register during the above times.

Program planned

Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, will host a “Lion for a Day” open house 9?a.m.-noon March 22. The event will provide prospective students an opportunity to experience college life at Penn State Fayette.

Current high school students, recent high school graduates and adults are invited to tour campus, attend mock classes and talk to Penn State admission and student aid counselors and faculty.

Anyone considering college will have an opportunity to learn how to prepare for an exciting career with any of Penn State Fayette’s six baccalaureate degrees, 10 associate degrees or the first two years of more than 160 Penn state majors. Current high school students are encouraged to bring their parents or guardians. Prospective students who apply to Penn State Fayette during the open house will have the $50 application fee waived. Students must bring their high school transcript and SAT or ACT score to qualify for the waiver.

Fair announced

The East End United Community Center College and Technical School Fair will be held 6-8:30?p.m. March 24 at 150 Coolspring Street, Uniontown, Pa. Fifteen college and technical school recruiters will be available.

Applications sought

The Bethlehem-Center School District will hold kindergarten registration April 7 and 8 at the elementary school. Parents must come to the school to get the necessary forms and schedule an appointment for the registration. These forms will be available after March 14 between the hours of 8:30?a.m. and 3:30?p.m. When the child comes for the actual registration, all forms are to have been completed.

Kindergarten registrants must be 5 years of age on or before July 1, 2010, in order to register.
