Uniontown man faces drug charges
?A Uniontown man wanted by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department was captured by police Sunday and found with drugs and cash.
Uniontown police Officer Michael Bittner said Charles Everett Bailey III, 21, was charged before Magisterial District Judge Michael M. Metros with possession with intent to deliver crack cocaine and possession of crack cocaine following the incident.
Bittner said he spotted Bailey, also known as “Sports Center,” pulling a vehicle into a parking spot in Pershing Court shortly before 4?p.m. and knew that he was wanted on a bench warrant issued by the sheriff’s department.
Bittner said that he positioned his police car behind Bailey’s vehicle to block him in because he has run from police trying to take him into custody on multiple occasions. He said that as Bailey exited his vehicle, he was able to take him into custody without incident.
According to Bittner, when he searched Bailey, he found nearly $800 in his wallet. Bittner said he then conducted a search of the vehicle with the consent of the owner, Carl Deshields of Uniontown.
Bittner said that the search was conducted because of information received by police that Bailey had told others that, “He had a gun and will shoot a police officer if they try to arrest him.”
Bittner said that while a gun was not discovered inside the car, officers did find 16 grams of crack cocaine inside the vehicle. The street value of the drugs is about $1,600.
Bailey was placed in the Fayette County Prison on $20,000 straight cash bond following his arraignment Sunday afternoon.
A preliminary hearing is tentatively set for 3?p.m. Monday before Metros.
Bailey has spent part of the last few years on the wrong side of the law, according to court records.
In July 2008, he was charged with burglary, theft, receiving stolen property and drug possession for an incident that occurred in North Union Township.
After initially pleading guilty to some of the charges after prosecutors withdrew the others, Bailey failed to appear in court and was sought on a bench warrant until police captured him in 2010. At that point, court records indicate he withdrew his guilty plea and is awaiting trial scheduled in June.
In March 2009, Bailey and co-conspirator Victor Tarpley of Uniontown were each charged with attempted homicide and additional charges after they allegedly fired gunshots at a car they were following in North Union Township. Eventually, the most serious charges were withdrawn against both men, according to court records.
In July, Bailey was charged in South Union Township with possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia. Those charges were held for court following a preliminary hearing March 16.
