Masontown police continue probe of homicide

By Josh Krysak heraldstandard.Com 2 min read

Masontown police said they are continuing to investigate the shooting death of a Masontown man who was gunned down in mid-August.

Borough police Chief Joseph C. Ryan said that police are continuing to pursue all leads in the homicide of Leon Mickens and are currently waiting for analysis of forensic evidence to be completed.

“We are working on this case and are proceeding with our investigation,” Ryan said, adding that investigators are awaiting the results of multiple tests regarding evidence in the case.

Ryan said Mickens, 35, was shot in the face and in the upper back and shoulder shortly before 10 p.m. Aug. 15.

Dr. Phillip E. Reilly, Fayette County coroner, has ruled the shooting death a homicide.

Ryan said the shooting occurred on Spring Lane at 9:55 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found Mickens lying on the road, Ryan said.

Ryan said that it appeared that Mickens and the suspect were in an argument just prior to the shooting.

After shooting Mickens twice with a .25-caliber handgun, Ryan said investigators believe the suspect fled the scene on a bicycle toward Fort Mason Village.

Although police have yet to release the identity of a suspect, Ryan said Monday that investigators are continuing to examine a “person of interest” in connection with the case.

Anyone with additional information regarding the shooting is asked to call police at 724-583-7779.
